Inktober 2017

Inktober is an annual drawing challenge that has gained worldwide popularity since its inception in 2009. I was feeling ambitious in 2017 and decided to tackle it, on top of taking weekly art classes, and otherwise dealing with a busy work schedule.

At first I tried following the daily prompts and drawing illustrations, but quickly realized I should make the challenge my own and apply it to my painting style. I started with basic brush gestures, inspired by calligraphy or simple improvisation.

This work was key to significant stylistic development of my subsequent work. It has also introduced new, recurring elements to my recent paintings.

2017, Ink, or ink and watercolour, mostly 6" x 6" (15cm x 15cm)
